Dizziness and Vestibular Disorders

Dizziness and Vestibular Disorders Oct22nd 2019

If you happen to be reading this, I sure am sorry.  I say this because I assume you, or someone you love, is having difficulties with dizziness.  And being dizzy is one of the worst symptoms anyone can have. I know. I treat patients who have dizziness.  And I’ve had it myself.

But don’t worry, there’s hope!

Some people call our sense of balance our 6th sense.  It works so perfectly we never even think about it. Most people go through their whole lives without any disruption in their vestibular system.  But when it’s not working properly, our life literally turns “topsy-turvy”.

Symptoms associated with a disorder of our vestibular system include:

A false sense of movement or spinning

Many types of problems of the inner ear can cause dizziness:

Infection of the inner ear

Meniere’s Disease

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)

Each of these inner ear disturbances have different signs and symptoms, and a trained provider can effectively determine the most likely source of your dizziness.

The cause of dizziness that is the most common is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo.  You know you have this type if you get only brief bouts of dizziness lasting 10-60 seconds after certain movements such as:

Rolling over in bed

Going from side-lying to sitting

Looking up

BPPV is treated very effectively by the physical therapists at Essential Physical Therapy, Eugene, OR.

During your evaluation, you will be asked to wear special goggles so that the physical therapist can observe your eye movements.

(You have to wear these)

Your eyes tell the story of not only which ear the problem is in, but even which canal is sending the signals.  The therapist observes this nastagmus, and guides you through different movements to correct the problem.

When BPPV is the cause of your dizziness, proper treatment typically resolves the problem in 1-4 sessions.

Re-read the list of signs and symptoms from BPPV above, and if that describes your issues, don’t hesitate to get treatment.  You’ll be glad you did.
